Character Name; Jenna Sommers
Canon; The Vampire Diaries http://vampirediaries.wikia.com/wiki/Jenna_Sommers
Canon Point; Season 2, Episode 21: The Sun also Rises
Age; 30
House; Freya
Power; Energy Transfer
Personality; The accident on Wickery Bridge that claimed the lives of Miranda and Grayson Gilbert, altered more than just the lives of their children forever. Jenna woke up one day, not only to discover that she had lost her sister, but to find herself the new and unprepared guardian of two teenagers, a role that we watch her struggle to master over the first two seasons of The Vampire Diaries.
Described as a party girl by those who knew her in High School (Mason Lockwood), Jenna had some hard lessons to learn when it came to parenting. She tries to take an almost, too casual approach to her role as Guardian but quickly learns that trying to relate to teenagers about your own history with drugs and screwing up, isn't going to work.
It's trial and error for Jenna but the important thing however, is that she learns from those errors, that despite her own grief and the fact that she's trying to balance college and this massive change in her life, Jenna is able to adapt as she goes, all suggesting she's somebody who can roll with the punches that get thrown her way, no matter how gutting they may be. Though it's perhaps cliché, she is somebody who when thrown in the deep end, will swim rather than sink, which we see throughout the series.
When she stops trying too hard to be somebody she thinks people can respect as a role model for Jeremy and Elena, Jenna's playful side emerges and she uses her sense of humor not only to diffuse tense situations but to tackle problems in the lives of those around her, teasing the young Gilberts about their love-lives and even sharing the occasional self-deprecating story from her own so they know they aren't alone.
She's more open-minded than most, at least compared to some of the parents of the other teens of Mystic Falls. She remembers what it means to be young and in love and doesn't balk at the idea of sex under their roof. She knows they're going to do it anyway, regardless of what she says and though it may be awkward at first (Who doesn't love walking in on their teacher and aunt half naked with ice-cream), she doesn't deny herself the opportunity to find love and happiness as a result of lifes upheaval.
Though early season one may suggest Jenna is a pushover, we soon see that she's not somebody who will refrain from speaking her mind. Jeremy pushes his luck but the moment we see Jenna push right back, we see the person she really is. She's not the kind of person who will let people walk all over her and though her horrendous history with men might suggest she is weak, especially where matters of the heart are concerned, Jenna's dealings with both Logan and Ric show that she will choose herself, preferring to be alone than to be with somebody who isn't right for her.
She challenges those around her to be better people simply by being the one who isn't afraid to give them a reality check when they need it. She can't just stand on the sidelines, saying and doing nothing when she believes the people she loves are making a mistake. Though we do learn that it was Katherine who kisses Damon on their front porch, Jenna who remains painfully unaware of the supernatural goings on in Mystic Falls right up until hours before her death, doesn't shy away from warning Elena to think about what she's doing with Damon. What's important about this moment however? It's a warning, not a demand, suggesting that Jenna understands that people need to learn for themselves.
What perhaps helps Jenna to adapt to her role as a Guardian is how alike she is to both Elena and Jeremy. Like Jer, she wasn't always a saint, she made mistakes growing up; didn't care about school, dabbled in drugs, dated people who either weren't right for her or didn't love her the way that she loved them; (Logan and John for Jenna and Vicki for Jeremy). She shares Elena's empathy, her ability to love with all her heart, to see the good in people even when they have made mistakes and to give them a chance to make up for those mistakes; (As we see with Ric and even Logan, even if his untimely death put an end to that).
It might be easy to argue that Jenna is naive, oblivious even considering what she has happening under her own roof but it's fair to say that your average human being would never consider the possibility of Vampires and Werewolves and yet, she's perhaps not as naive as she may have seemed, considering how quick she is to adapt to the supernatural truth of Mystic Falls. She's seen enough to know that something is off, but wasn't ready to make the mental leap until it's laid out before her.
One of the great tragedies of her life and eventual death, is that it takes until that moment (just before her death) for it to be clear that despite all her fears about not being able to live up to her sister seeming perfection as a parent, that she is everything that that any mother might hope to see in somebody who raises their children after they're gone. She wants to live, but more importantly when the time comes, she is willing to sacrifice herself in order to try and protect Elena. In the face of death, she shows unquestionable bravery and though it might have been easier for her to turn off her humanity, she chooses to remain herself until the very end.

So. Asgard huh? Good thing I've never been a Giants fan [Jenna's smile sits uneasy on her lips and though she's trying for humor here, the nervous edge to her voice makes it hard to swallow.]
Anyway. I've got some people back home that I'd really like to keep sa- [Her eyes go glassy, the words stick in her throat and a pained expression, one of frustration morphs her features as she forces herself to breathe in and out in an attempt to regain her composure.] Yeah, was not going to get emotional on you all I swear.
[She takes another moment to pull it together, running fingers that tremble back through her hair. If she had any idea that her family was here to see this, she would have worked harder to hold it together but as far as Jenna knows, Elena and Jeremy are back home. Safe. At least? God she hopes that's true.]
Right! [Mentally telling herself to get it together.] So. I guess if we're picking teams here... Go Freya?

Had you told Jenna Sommers ten years ago that before she made thirty, she would not only be the single parent of two teenagers but it would be the greatest achievement of her life? She'd have laughed in your face and taken another shot of tequila. Her? Somebodies parent? A rolemodel? Nuh-uh. Not this girl. Never mind that she couldn't even keep a chia pet alive. Kids? The white picket fence and the house in the burbs? That was not going to be her.
That life? That was her sister Miranda. Sure, it was nice to visit sometimes, see how the other side lived and yeah, Jenna even envied what Miranda and Grayson had but they made it look so easy. She couldn't even babysit her niece and nephew for an afternoon without feeling like she'd been hit by a truck and she was young. She still had so much living to do before settling down was even a consideration for her and with her track record with men? There was going to be a lot of toads before the would be Mr Charming came along.
"I'm gonna die aren't I?"
She could hear Elena talking to her, making promises Jenna knew that no matter how much she wanted to, there was no way that she could possibly keep. All that time she was supposed to have, that future she was just starting to want for herself, it was ticking away like the second hand on a clock.
It was funny how sometimes you didn't know how much you wanted something until you were about to lose it. This life? She was probably the worst Guardian the world had ever known but, she tried. She tried so hard to be the kind of person that her sister would have been proud of. To be somebody who Jeremy and Elena could trust and respect. She'd got it wrong, so many times she'd managed to screw things up but she'd done the best that she knew how. Better than she ever would have thought possible before now.
If this was it? If the sum total of her life added up to this moment? She wasn't going to be remembered as the girl that could break 25 seconds doing a keg stand as a freshman in college and, nobody was going to talk about how in Senior Year, she and Mason Lockwood managed to pull off a Senior Prank that people were still talking about to this day. She'd be remembered for this. Not dying in a quarry at the hands of Klaus but Elena and Jeremy. It had been the most impossible year of her life and yet she wouldn't have traded it for anything in the world.
Maybe she wasn't the best role model but if she died now? She was going to die being the kind of person that everyone she loved, everyone who mattered to her could really be proud of and that? That was the greatest achievement of Jenna's too short life.
